(1)Taxes on a litre of diesel in India are much higher than the
subsidy on it. In effect, the subsidy lowers the tax rate on
 diesel. it would be simpler, then, to lower the tax and dispense the

(2)The outlines of a compromise were visible at the European summit.
Germany and other northern States would provide more
  money, in this specific case to help rescue the sinking Spanish
banking sector and ease Italy's  debt problems. In turn,
  these southern government agreed to surrender some more soverignty
to what is shaping up to be a European-wide banking
  regulator. In effect, slowly but surely, Europe is moving towards
the creation of a super-state.

(3)The centre after paying 68,000 crore to oil companies in 2011-2012,
paid an additional 38,000 crore to compensate them to
sell diesel, LPG and kerosense at below cost. This was supplemented by
an additional support of 52,000 crore from upstream oil
companies that came in the form of discounts on crude oil to these
companies. In effect, it is taxpayers' money and government
 borrowings that are keeping the oil companies profitable. in return,
the petroleum sector delivered 136,497 crore as taxes to

(4)Foreign diplomats can finally study  while posted in India, with
the UPA government relaxing rules that till now
effectively barred from pursuing any academic programme at the
country's universities. The move comes after several
  foreign missions petitioned the Centre against the old regualation,
at a time when understading emerging economics like
  China and India is a key part of foreign relations for most
countries around the world. "In effect, we were told that we could
  not study while we were posted here," said a European diplomat who
wrote to the ministry of external affairs(MEA) on the regulation.
